Andrei Nuțu

Andrei Nuțu is a Romanian artist based in Cluj & Bucharest. In his work, Andrei explores the possibilities of figurative painting through diverse techniques and textures, having shown a preference for oil and charcoal. Reaching highly abstracted figures, his paintings focus on the potential of human depiction in transporting the viewer into a mistycal, intimate and timless atmosphere that invites introspection.

Andrei graduated as valedictorian of the Faculty of Fine Arts (University of Art and Design Cluj-Napoca) and spent a semester abroad at Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. His BA project, METANOIA, was exhibited in Cluj, Bucharest and Athena. Having completed his master’s studies with the MARTYRS project, Andrei moved to Bucharest, where he commits to integrate, from a contemporary point of view,  a technique that survived the test of time, fresco.

"There are two sides to every story, but then there are countless layers to every narrative – it all depends on what we choose to focus on. Sometimes we can’t see the forest for the trees, while other times we need to step closer to be able to clearly see the story in front of us unfold. Our entire world is made of layers. From atoms to the physical universe, from a cell to a human being and from our most hidden desire and thoughts to the way we project ourselves out into the world.

We are most out of context when we're observed within a context. My work looks to analyse our humanly ephemeral experiences and see how the layers of our consciousness are generated or influenced by the depth we plunge into during life’s seemingly fleeting moments – to depict not only the close-ups, but also what, sometimes involuntary, was left out of focus."
